For military history buffs, this is one of the most important places in the south. Take a ferry boat out to Fort Sumter to see the spot where the Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on this Federal fort. Wander around the remains of what was once an impressive fortification protecting Charleston Harbor.
