In the far eastern corner of Charleston County you will find this wonderful Wildlife Management Area, where the South Santee River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It is operated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, which also operates the nearby Santee Delta Wildlife Management Area. Plenty of trails and boardwalks run through the woods and swamps, offering opportunities for hiking and off-road bicycling. Some of the roads have lowcountry-style tree canopies hanging over them. One boardwalk offers some great views of the wetlands and waterways. Bugs can be a serious problem during the summer months.
